What is an Oil Painting?

Oil paintings are the end result created by artists that utilise oil paints as a medium for their artistic work. Different dry powder colour pigments are mixed with a refined linseed oil to the required consistency so that the paint can then be applied fluently by the artist to the desired painting surface, such as, canvas or board.​

History of Oil Painting

.Oil paintings date back to around the 7th century as used by Buddhists to create murals.

 

However, it was not until the 15th century that oil painting became more prominent in Europe during the early renaissance period. The artist, Jan van Eyck, a Flemish artist is credited as one of the early innovators of oil painting. By the 16th century oil colours increasingly emerged as the painting material used by Venetian artists whom had become proficient in the exploitation of the basic characteristics of oil painting, particularly by the method of successively layering glazes to create the desired image.

Famous Oil Painting Artists

Some of the world's most famous artists used oil paints as a way to depict what they were painting, such as:-

  • Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci circa 1503;

  • Girl with the Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer circa 1665; and

  • The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh circa 1889.
