Charles Blackman created the "Schoolgirls series" of artworks using the medium of oil on board between 1952 and 1955. The images created by Blackman typically evoked depictions of uniformed, mostly solitary schoolgirls in suburban settings. In doing so, Blackman was, through his art, arguably exploring his own thoughts on alienation and vulnerability and reflecting societal concern for safety of women through his Schoolgirls series of paintings.
Original paintings from Blackman's Schoolgirl series have been valued and sold in the art market approaching $200,000. They are a definite collector's item.
