Denise Green (b. 1946) is an Australian-born painter who has lived and worked in New York since the late 1960s. She is internationally recognised for her unique approach to abstraction, which draws inspiration from a wide range of sources including Indigenous Australian culture, Asian philosophies, European modernism, and American abstraction.

Green studied in Paris under painter Barto dos Santos and later moved to New York, where she came into contact with influential artists such as Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell. Over her career, she has exhibited widely in the United States, Australia, and Europe, and her work is represented in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the National Gallery of Australia.

Her art often explores memory, perception, and spirituality, blending personal imagery with universal forms. Green is also a writer; her publications, such as Metonymy in Contemporary Art (2005), have contributed significantly to critical debates on contemporary abstraction.

Michele Helmrich is an Australian art historian and curator who served as Acting Director of the University of Queensland Art Museum. She has written extensively on Australian contemporary art and curated numerous exhibitions. In this book, Helmrich provides critical insights into Denise Green’s practice, contextualising her work within both Australian and international art histories.
