Drawings | Principles and Techniques
Drawing is one of the oldest forms of visual art.
Drawing involves the process of creating artworks and images on a surface, usually paper, by means of marks, typically using different mediums, like: graphite, pen & ink, chalk, charcoal, crayon; or pastel. Or some combination of these.
Traditionally drawings were monochrome (grey), although in more modern times coloured pencils or coloured pastels are used to create colourful art pieces.
Many artists use sketches as an under-drawing, with either oil paints or acrylics paints then being layered over the drawing to create the final artwork. For example, the old masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Rubens would use preparatory drawings before committing to each painting.
There are a number of drawing styles, including:- figure drawing, cartooning, doodling, and freehand. Drawing methods also vary, such as:- line drawing, stippling, shading, entopic graphomania (involving a sequence of dots and lines), etc.
