Edition Prints
What is a Limited Edition Print?
A limited edition print is produced in a fixed number of impressions. Once the edition is complete, no further prints are intended to be produced from that edition. Limited edition prints are often signed and numbered by the artist, commonly in pencil, with the edition number shown as, for example, 33/150.
Numbered edition — e.g. 33/150 means the 33rd print from an edition of 150.
A/P — Artist’s Proof — a proof retained by the artist, often produced in smaller numbers than the main edition.
P/P — Printer’s Proof — a proof usually retained by, or given to, the printer.
T/P — Trial Proof — a test or experimental proof created during the development of the print.
The History of Limited Edition Prints
Limited edition prints have a long history, from early woodcuts and engravings to lithographs, screenprints and contemporary fine art editions.
Today, collectors often look for signed and numbered works, smaller edition sizes, certificates of authenticity and strong artist recognition.
Buying Limited Edition Prints
Where available, product listings include details such as artist, title, medium, edition number, signature, proof type, image size, sheet size, condition and any certificate or provenance information. Please review the individual listing carefully, as each print may vary in presentation, framing and condition.
A signed or limited edition print offers more than a decorative image. It forms part of an artist’s recognised body of work and may have a defined place within a numbered edition or group of proofs.
Edition size, artistic significance, rarity, condition, provenance and demand can all affect collectability. Because individual works are limited, a particular edition number or proof may not become available again once sold.
