Isaac Asimov

Isaac Asimov (1920–1992) was one of the most prolific and influential writers of the 20th century, best known for shaping modern science fiction.

  • Born: Petrovichi, Russia (then Soviet Union)

  • Raised: New York City, USA (immigrated as a child)

  • Profession: Writer, professor of biochemistry, science communicator

  • Output: ~500 books across science fiction, popular science, history, and essays

Asimov was a central figure in the Golden Age of Science Fiction, alongside authors like Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke.

He is particularly admired for combining scientific accuracy, philosophical depth, and accessible storytelling—often exploring how humans interact with technology, especially robots and artificial intelligence.

His major works included:

  • I, Robot (1950)

  • The Caves of Steel (1953)

  • The Naked Sun (1957)

  • The Robots of Dawn (1983)

In addition Asimov created the following series:-

Foundation Series

  • Foundation (1951)
A mathematician predicts the fall of a galactic empire and creates a plan to preserve knowledge.

  • Foundation and Empire (1952)
The Foundation faces threats from the collapsing Empire and a mysterious enemy.

  • Second Foundation (1953)
Focuses on hidden forces shaping the future of civilisation.

  • Foundation’s Edge (1982)
Revives the series decades later with new philosophical themes.

  • Foundation and Earth (1986)
Explores humanity’s origins and ties together Asimov’s universe.

Galactic Empire Series

  • Pebble in the Sky (1950)

  • The Stars, Like Dust (1951)

  • The Currents of Space (1952)

These novels bridge the gap between early human expansion and the later Foundation universe.

Other Notable Works

  • Fantastic Voyage (1966) – Novelisation of the sci-fi film

  • The Gods Themselves (1972) – Multiverse and alien contact (Hugo & Nebula winner)
