This striking vintage travel poster presents Cologne (Köln) through one of Germany’s most recognisable landmarks, the soaring twin towers of Cologne Cathedral.
Designed by German graphic artist Jupp Wiertz around 1938, the composition transforms the cathedral into a dramatic blaze of orange and gold against a deep black sky. Below, sweeping lines of traffic, pedestrians and illuminated streets convey the energy of the modern city, while the monumental Gothic architecture dominates the scene above.
Wiertz was one of Germany’s leading commercial and travel-poster designers of the 1920s and 1930s. His later work increasingly adopted the bold forms, simplified geometry and strong contrasts associated with Art Deco-era tourism advertising.
A powerful example of interwar German graphic design, this poster combines historic architecture with the excitement of urban travel, making it an evocative celebration of Cologne during the golden age of illustrated tourism posters.
