A spectacular vintage French travel poster by celebrated illustrator Roger Broders, created for the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée (PLM) railway to promote automobile tourism through the French Alps.
Titled La Route des Alpes – De la Mer à la Haute Montagne (“The Route of the Alps – From the Sea to the High Mountains”), the poster presents the celebrated Alpine touring route running from Nice and the Mediterranean coast through the French Alps towards Lake Geneva. A vivid yellow road winds through the mountainous landscape, passing destinations including Puget-Théniers, Barcelonnette, Briançon, Grenoble, Chambéry, Annecy, Évian and Chamonix.
In the foreground, elegantly dressed travellers set out aboard an open PLM touring coach surrounded by brilliant Mediterranean flowers. Broders combines the romance of early motoring with dramatic mountain scenery, using bold blocks of colour, simplified forms and striking typography characteristic of his distinctive graphic style.
Roger Broders (1883–1953) became one of the most important artists associated with French railway and tourism advertising during the golden age of travel posters. His designs for the PLM are particularly admired for their sophisticated compositions and evocative portrayals of the French Riviera, Alps and fashionable European resorts.
A superb choice for a collection of French travel posters, Alpine art, vintage railway advertising or French Riviera décor.
