Created in 1895 by American illustrator and graphic designer Ethel Reed, The House of the Trees and Other Poems is an exquisite example of late nineteenth-century literary advertising and Art Nouveau-inspired poster design.
Originally commissioned to promote a collection of poetry by Canadian author Ethelwyn Wetherald, the poster depicts an elegantly dressed woman in a flowing green gown, seated beneath a canopy of slender trees while holding an open book.
Its delicate black outlines, graceful botanical details and restrained palette of soft greens create a dreamlike atmosphere, capturing the tranquillity and romanticism of nature and literature.
Published by Lamson, Wolffe & Company of Boston, the poster reflects the flourishing American poster movement of the 1890s, when illustrated advertisements became celebrated works of decorative art.
Ethel Reed was among the pioneering female commercial artists of her generation, admired for her distinctive compositions combining elegant female figures with flowing natural forms.
This piece is particularly appealing to collectors of Art Nouveau, historic book advertising and early American graphic design.
