Created in 1895 by French poster artist Ferdinand Misti-Mifliez, Cycles Gladiator is a lively example of Belle Époque advertising, celebrating the excitement, freedom and growing popularity of cycling in late nineteenth-century France.

The charming composition depicts a fashionable young woman and her male companion riding bicycles along a winding country road, apparently making a spirited escape from a uniformed rural policeman tumbling behind them.

Bold red lettering announces the Gladiator bicycle brand, while the muted greens, warm earth tones and expressive figures capture the playful humour and artistic character of French advertising during the 1890s.

Misti was an accomplished French illustrator and lithographer whose posters combined lively storytelling with distinctive typography and elegant period imagery. His work reflects an era when cycling was becoming an increasingly fashionable form of recreation and personal independence.

With its engaging narrative, nostalgic colours and unmistakable Parisian character, this vintage advertising poster makes an appealing decorative print for a study, living room, hallway or cycling enthusiast's collection.

Particularly suited to admirers of French Belle Époque design, historic cycling imagery and nineteenth-century advertising art.
