Created around 1900 by Dutch artist Jacques Zon, Pietas is a remarkable example of European Art Nouveau advertising, combining elaborate decorative illustration with a dramatic allegorical composition.
Originally produced for the Pietas Life Insurance Company of Utrecht, the poster depicts a radiant, red-haired winged figure protecting a mother and child from a menacing dragon-like creature. Golden rays emerge from the creature's mouth as the protective figure raises a shield, creating a theatrical struggle between security and danger.
The composition employs the flowing lines, stylised figures and intricate ornamental details characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement. Its striking combination of deep blue, emerald green, soft cream and vivid orange-red is complemented by elegant Dutch lettering and decorative borders.
More than a commercial advertisement, the poster reflects the artistic ambition of European advertising at the turn of the twentieth century, when businesses increasingly commissioned accomplished illustrators to communicate their messages through sophisticated works of art.
An outstanding decorative print, particularly appealing to collectors of Art Nouveau, European poster design and historical advertising.
