Published in 1900, The Opera is an ornate American sheet music cover associated with the burlesque productions of the comedy partnership Weber & Fields. Combining theatrical portraiture, decorative typography and turn-of-the-century colour printing, it offers a vivid glimpse into the popular stage culture of the period.

The design centres on a photographic portrait of celebrated singer and actress Lillian Russell, framed by elaborate scrollwork in shades of blue, violet and teal. Smaller portraits of performers Joseph Weber and Lew Fields appear above, while the richly layered lettering announces selections from the productions Fiddle-Dee-Dee and Quo Vass Iss.

The cover advertises The Opera, described as a burlesque scene performed by Lillian Russell and DeWolf Hopper. Lyrics were written by Edgar Smith, with music by John Stromberg, and the score was published by M. Witmark & Sons in New York and Chicago. The New York Public Library records the item as a 14-page score issued in 1900 as part of its American popular songs collection.

The combination of formal portrait photography and exuberant ornamental design makes this more than a piece of sheet music. It is also a decorative record of American musical theatre at the beginning of the twentieth century, when burlesque, comic opera and popular song shared the stage.

This restored reproduction has been carefully prepared to improve clarity, colour balance and print presentation while preserving the softly aged paper tone and intricate decorative character of the original cover. The product gallery includes both the restored artwork and a styled interior mock-up showing how the print may appear when framed and displayed.

With its refined blue palette and historic theatre associations, The Opera is especially well suited to a music room, study, library, dressing room or interior inspired by vintage performance and musical history.
