Created by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in 1891, Moulin Rouge: La Goulue is one of the most iconic posters of Belle Époque Paris. Commissioned to advertise the newly opened Moulin Rouge, the work helped launch Toulouse-Lautrec’s career as a poster artist and established the bold visual language now associated with Parisian nightlife.
At the centre, the celebrated cancan dancer La Goulue performs beneath the lights of the crowded dance hall, her white skirts lifted as she moves across the floor. In the foreground, the elongated profile of dancer and acrobat Valentin le Désossé forms a striking grey silhouette, while the surrounding audience is reduced to a dark band of top hats and shadowed figures.
Toulouse-Lautrec uses flattened colour, severe cropping and simplified silhouettes to create a composition that feels immediate and modern. The palette of yellow, black, red and grey gives the poster remarkable visual force, while the repeated Moulin Rouge lettering and oversized typography turn the advertisement itself into part of the spectacle.
The original poster was printed in Paris by Affiches Américaines, Charles Lévy. It is a four-colour lithograph produced on three sheets of wove paper and measures approximately 190 × 116.5 cm. The advertisement brought Toulouse-Lautrec widespread recognition and featured two of the Moulin Rouge’s star performers, La Goulue and Valentin le Désossé.
This restored reproduction has been carefully prepared to improve clarity, colour balance and print presentation while retaining the gently aged surface and historic character of the original image. The product gallery includes both the restored artwork and a styled mock-up showing how the print may appear when framed and displayed.
Bold, theatrical and unmistakably Parisian, Moulin Rouge: La Goulue is especially well suited to a home bar, music room, study, dining room or interior inspired by cabaret culture and fin-de-siècle Paris.
