Created by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in 1892–93, Divan Japonais is one of the defining images of fin-de-siècle Paris. Designed to advertise the celebrated Montmartre café-concert at 75 rue des Martyrs, the poster captures the fashionable spectators, performers and theatrical atmosphere of the city’s nightlife.

In the foreground sits dancer Jane Avril, recognised by her vivid orange hair, sweeping black hat and sharply silhouetted dress. Beside her is writer and nightclub regular Édouard Dujardin, shown in profile with a top hat and cane. On the stage in the upper left appears the cropped figure of singer Yvette Guilbert, identifiable by her long black gloves and slender form.

Toulouse-Lautrec reduces the scene to a striking arrangement of black, yellow, grey and orange. Bold silhouettes, abrupt cropping and flattened areas of colour reveal the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, while the off-centre composition gives the work the immediacy of a moment glimpsed across a crowded cabaret.

The original poster is a multi-colour lithograph on wove paper measuring approximately 80.8 × 60.8 cm. This restored reproduction has been carefully prepared to improve clarity, tonal balance and print presentation while retaining the softly aged surface and graphic character of the historic artwork.

Sophisticated, theatrical and instantly recognisable, Divan Japonais is especially well suited to a home bar, study, dining room, music room or Parisian-inspired interior. The product gallery includes both the restored artwork and a styled mock-up showing how the print may appear when framed and displayed.
