Created by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in 1893, Jane Avril is one of the artist’s most celebrated portrayals of Parisian nightlife. Commissioned to advertise the dancer’s appearance at the Jardin de Paris, the poster captures the distinctive movement, personality and theatrical energy that made Jane Avril a star of the fin-de-siècle cabaret scene.
Avril appears at the upper left, performing one of her characteristic high kicks in a vivid orange dress edged with pale yellow ruffles. Her sharply cropped figure is viewed across the neck of a double bass, held by an unseen musician whose hand and expressive face dominate the foreground. The upward thrust of the instrument echoes the angle of Avril’s raised leg, creating a dynamic visual rhythm across the composition.
Toulouse-Lautrec’s design is strikingly modern. Flattened areas of colour, severe cropping, sinuous outlines and the radically tilted viewpoint transform the crowded dance-hall scene into a bold graphic image. The restricted palette of black, orange, yellow and muted green adds to the poster’s immediate visual impact.
Jane Avril was both a celebrated performer and a lifelong friend of Toulouse-Lautrec. The original is a five-colour lithograph from 1893, printed on machine-made wove paper and measuring approximately 129.1 × 93.5 cm.
This restored reproduction has been carefully prepared to improve clarity, tonal balance and print presentation while retaining the softly aged texture and lively graphic character of the historic work. The product gallery includes both the restored artwork and a styled interior mock-up showing how the print may appear when framed and displayed.
Expressive, theatrical and unmistakably Parisian, Jane Avril is particularly well suited to a study, music room, home bar, dining room or interior inspired by Belle Époque Paris.
