Dating from approximately 1890–1904, this dramatic poster for the Walter L. Main Three-Ring Trained Wild Animal Shows celebrates the danger, balance and theatrical excitement of turn-of-the-century circus aerial performance.
Against a brilliant yellow ground, seven high-wire artists perform a sequence of increasingly difficult feats above a densely packed audience. One performer balances on a single foot while holding a decorative parasol, another carries a child on his shoulder, and several pairs move carefully along the wire with partners raised above them. At the centre, a female aerialist stands confidently beneath an ornate parasol, giving the composition a strong focal point.
The poster’s spacious background emphasises the height and exposure of the performers, while the bright red lettering and decorative parasols create immediate visual impact. The lower caption promises “the most difficult and dangerous feats ever devised by human ingenuity,” reflecting the spectacular promotional language commonly used by travelling circuses of the period.
The poster dates broadly around 1890–1904 and identifies the Riverside Printing Company of Milwaukee as its lithographer and publisher. The original colour lithograph measures approximately 106 × 71 cm and belongs to the Billy Rose Theatre Division’s circus poster collection.
The work details seven aerialists performing high-wire feats, including partner balances, a handkerchief-picking trick and the use of large decorative parasols.
This restored reproduction has been carefully prepared to improve clarity, colour balance and print presentation while preserving the softly aged paper tone and lively character of the historic artwork. The product gallery includes both the restored print and a styled interior mock-up showing how the work may appear when framed and displayed.
Bold, unusual and full of movement, Walter L. Main Circus — High-Wire Artists is especially well suited to a games room, study, theatre-inspired interior or collection of vintage circus and performance art.
