Published in 1909, this richly illustrated Ringling Bros. poster advertises a special appearance by Schuman’s German Horse Circus, an equestrian company celebrated for its elaborate trained-horse performances.
The composition brings together several acts within one colourful panorama. At the centre, a formation of sixteen horses rises dramatically onto its hind legs beneath the direction of a uniformed trainer. Smaller scenes show horses performing the celebrated Brewery Act, seated around a table with beer steins, alongside carriage displays and the comic Berliner Drosky Act.
Large red lettering announces “Ringling Bros. Presenting Schuman’s German Horse Circus”, while the dense arrangement of horses, trainers, carriages and costumed performers conveys the scale and variety of the touring spectacle. Bright reds, yellows, greens and blues give the poster the vivid impact typical of early twentieth-century circus lithography.
The work is a 1909 poster advertising Schuman’s horse circus with Ringling Brothers. It was published in Cincinnati by Strobridge Litho Co. and measures approximately 51 × 75 cm. The illustrated acts include “Schuman’s 16 Astounding Arabians,” the Brewery Act and the Berliner Drosky Act.
The poster also serves as a historical record of the once-popular use of trained animals in travelling entertainment. Its imagery reflects the promotional language and performance conventions of its era, which differ from contemporary expectations regarding animal welfare.
This restored reproduction has been carefully prepared to improve clarity, colour balance and print presentation while preserving the gently aged paper tone and lively character of the original artwork. The product gallery includes both the restored image and a styled mock-up showing how the print may appear when framed and displayed.
Energetic, colourful and filled with period detail, Schuman’s German Horse Circus is especially suited to a games room, study, equestrian interior or collection of vintage circus and performance art.
