Dating from around 1915, this colourful Barnum & Bailey circus poster promotes Miss Amy Dupont, billed as the “first and only lady elephant trainer,” performing with her “marvellous war elephants.”
 
The composition presents a crowded and highly theatrical elephant display. Uniformed animals carry flags, wear naval-style caps and appear in imagined military roles, while one elephant is marked as a nurse and another as part of a medical corps. At the centre, Amy Dupont stands confidently before a smoking cannon, directing the elaborate spectacle around her.
 
Bold red lettering announces “Barnum & Bailey — Greatest Show on Earth” across the top, while the strong yellow, blue, black and red palette gives the poster the immediate visual impact required of large-scale circus advertising. The dense arrangement of elephants, performers and military props creates a lively sense of movement, spectacle and showmanship.
 
The design also reflects the patriotic and militarised entertainment themes used by travelling circuses during the early twentieth century. Viewed today, it offers an intriguing record of historic popular entertainment, promotional exaggeration and changing attitudes towards the use of animals in performance.
The poster identifies Strobridge Litho Co. of Cincinnati as its publisher and lithographer. The original colour lithograph measures approximately 50 × 75 cm and belongs to the Billy Rose Theatre Division’s circus poster collection.
 
This restored reproduction has been carefully prepared to improve clarity, tonal balance and print presentation while preserving the softly aged paper tone and vivid character of the historic poster.
