Created by Utagawa Hiroshige around 1840, Maizaka is a tranquil Edo-period view of the coastal station of Maizaka along the historic Tōkaidō route.

The scene captures a busy waterside landing where travellers and porters prepare goods for transport. Bundled packages are being carried from a boat, while figures pause along the shore beneath wind-shaped pine trees. Beyond them, deep blue water stretches towards rocky islands and layered mountains, creating a calm contrast with the activity in the foreground.

Hiroshige’s use of blue-green tones, pale sky and warm touches of peach gives the print an atmospheric sense of early morning or evening light. The tall masts at the left, distant sails and carefully placed figures guide the eye through the landscape, while the strong horizontal format reinforces the breadth of the coastal setting.

The artwork was created circa 1840 during Japan’s Edo period. The original is a woodblock print in ink and colour on paper, measuring approximately 22.2 × 34.9 cm.

This restored reproduction has been carefully prepared to improve clarity, colour balance and print presentation while preserving the gently aged paper, restrained palette and historic character of the original woodblock print. The product gallery includes both the restored artwork and a styled mock-up showing how the print may appear when framed and displayed.

Peaceful yet full of narrative detail, Maizaka is especially suited to a living room, study, hallway or interior inspired by Japanese travel, coastal landscapes and traditional ukiyo-e design.
