Gai-Jin is the third chronological novel in James Clavell’s celebrated Asian Saga, following Shōgun and Tai-Pan. Set in Japan in 1862, the novel explores the turbulent transitional period between the Tokugawa shogunate and the dawn of the Meiji era.

The story revolves around:

  • Powerful Western trading families (the “Tai-Pan” lineage)

  • Japanese daimyō and samurai factions

  • Clashing cultures, loyalties, and political intrigue

  • Themes of forbidden love, honour, ambition, and violent upheaval

Clavell blends meticulous historical research with high drama, delivering a richly layered narrative that examines the tension between Japan’s ancient traditions and the encroaching power of Western influence.

Gai-Jin is widely regarded as one of his most complex and politically charged novels.
