Created by Utagawa Hiroshige in 1858, Fuji from Miura, Sagami presents Mount Fuji rising beyond the calm waters of Sagami Bay. The print belongs to Hiroshige’s series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, produced during the closing years of Japan’s Edo period.
Mount Fuji appears in the distance as a pale, simplified silhouette above a warm band of red cloud. In the middle ground, small sailing vessels move across the open water, while the rugged Miura coastline extends into the bay at the right. Sparse pine trees, rocky islands and lightly drawn waves give the foreground a quiet, spacious character.
Hiroshige’s composition relies on subtle gradations of blue, green and rose rather than dramatic detail. The mountain is distant yet unmistakable, becoming a calm visual anchor within the broad coastal landscape. The vertical format and high viewpoint allow the eye to move from the deep blue foreground water towards the horizon and the softly outlined summit.
The original woodblock print was in ink and colour on paper, measuring approximately 36.2 × 24 cm.
This restored reproduction has been carefully prepared to improve clarity, tonal balance and print presentation while preserving the aged paper, delicate colour transitions and historic woodblock character of the original image. The product gallery includes both the restored artwork and a styled mock-up showing how the print may appear when framed and displayed.
Peaceful and atmospheric, Fuji from Miura, Sagami is especially well suited to a study, bedroom, living room or interior inspired by Japanese art, coastal landscapes and quiet natural forms.
