This striking vintage Alaska travel poster was created by American landscape painter Sydney Laurence (1868–1940) for the Northern Pacific Railway, as part of the railway's promotion of travel to Alaska.

Dating from the 1920s, the poster depicts Native Alaskans travelling by traditional umiak against a dramatic backdrop of snow-covered mountains and deep blue water.

Laurence was renowned for his romantic depictions of the Alaskan landscape, and the composition combines his atmospheric landscape style with the bold visual language of early twentieth-century railway advertising. The original design was produced as a colour lithograph, with the original poster measuring approximately 102 × 76 cm.

The poster captures the adventurous spirit of the golden age of American travel, when railway companies commissioned accomplished artists to promote remote destinations through evocative imagery and striking graphic design.

A distinctive reproduction for lovers of Alaska, vintage travel posters, railway art, maritime imagery and historic American graphic design.
