Created by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen in 1890, Le Rêve is an elegant French theatre poster advertising Léon Gastinel’s ballet at the Académie Nationale de Musique in Paris.

The composition presents a ballerina in the foreground wearing a tutu beneath a flowing kimono-style robe, while a procession of dancers and theatrical figures unfolds behind her. Large decorative fans, banners, stylised trees and a moonlit setting create an elaborate stage spectacle framed by bamboo-like borders.

Steinlen combines the visual language of French poster design with the late nineteenth-century European fascination with Japanese art. Flat areas of orange, green, black and cream, asymmetrical placement and decorative lettering show the influence of ukiyo-e prints, while the crowded procession gives the design a lively sense of pageantry and performance.

The ballet was set in an imagined sixteenth-century Japan and reflected the period’s highly romanticised European interpretation of Japanese culture. The production featured a monumental fan-shaped set, large fans carried by performers and a principal dancer wearing a kimono over her tutu.

The original poster is a photo-relief print, or gillotage, produced by printer Charles Gillot in 1890. It measures approximately 89 × 63.7 cm. This restored reproduction has been carefully prepared to improve clarity, colour balance and print presentation while preserving the softly aged paper tone and historic character of the original artwork.

With its theatrical subject, refined palette and unusual fusion of ballet and Japonisme, Le Rêve is especially well suited to a music room, study, theatre-inspired interior, dressing room or collection of vintage French performance posters. The product gallery includes both the restored artwork and a styled interior mock-up showing how the print may appear when framed and displayed.
