More Information
(Etching): An etching involves a metal plate (usually copper) that has been coated with a waxy substance called a “ground”. The art work is then drawn into the ground to expose the metal. The plate is then immersed into an acid bath, which chemically dissolves the exposed lines. The ground is then removed, ink is introduced into the incised lines, the plate cleaned. The plate is covered with a dampened paper and run through a press under high pressure forcing the paper into the lines, resulting in the raised characteristic of etching. To create the colour, each etching is then hand painted by the artist.
(Edition): This refers to the total number of prints struck from one plate.
(Limited Edition): Means that a fixed number of prints or impressions are produced, thus making the print more scarce, valuable and collectable.
(Printers Proof (P/P)): A printers proof is held by the publisher/printer and operates as both a gesture of appreciation from the artist and a record of the publishing/printing. A publisher/printer may sell their P/P as it may constitute a part of their payment, which accounts for why printers proofs enter the art marketplace.
