Step into the world of Edwardian vaudeville with this remarkable theatrical poster announcing Harry Houdini’s appearance at the Palace Theatre in Halifax in November 1903.

Printed as a tall, narrow playbill, the design relies on bold black typography, illustrated escape imagery and a warm aged-paper ground. At its centre, Houdini is shown bound in chains and handcuffs beneath the enormous headline HOUDINI, while smaller illustrations below celebrate his reputation for escaping from prisons and restraints across Europe and America.

The poster promotes Houdini as the “world’s famous jail breaker” and “the only and original Handcuff King,” capturing the sensational language of turn-of-the-century entertainment advertising. References to performances twice nightly, popular prices and a supporting vaudeville company evoke the excitement of a live theatre engagement at the height of Houdini’s early international fame.

Its elongated format, uncompromising typography and authentic period wear give the artwork a strong archival character. It is particularly suited to a study, home theatre, library, entertainment room or collection of vintage magic, circus and performance art.

This reproduction has been carefully prepared from the surviving historical image while retaining the original paper tone, printed texture, typography and period appearance.
