Created in 1922 after a design by George Barbier, Sortilèges is a richly decorative fashion plate from Gazette du Bon Ton, the influential Parisian fashion journal known for presenting couture through refined illustration and luxury colour printing.

The title Sortilèges translates approximately as “Enchantments” or “Spells”, a fitting name for this mysterious composition. A poised woman stands in a long pale-blue evening gown, holding a vivid red hand mirror against a dark background. Her beaded bodice, jewelled headband and elongated silhouette evoke the elegance and theatrical sophistication of early 1920s fashion.

Behind her rises an extraordinary phoenix, its broad wings and sweeping tail feathers filling the composition with bronze, gold and muted rose. The mythical bird transforms the fashion plate into something almost ceremonial, linking the evening dress with ideas of glamour, transformation and rebirth.

The garment as an evening gown by fashion designer Gustav Beer, decorated with diamonds and accompanied by earrings and a diadem. The work was produced after Barbier’s illustrated design by fashion designer Gustav Beer.

The original was made using photomechanical colour printing with letterpress text and measures approximately 24.4 × 18.9 cm.

This restored reproduction has been carefully prepared to improve clarity, tonal balance and print presentation while preserving the softly aged paper tone, delicate linework and jewel-like colour of the original fashion plate. The product gallery includes both the restored artwork and a styled interior mock-up showing how the print may appear when framed and displayed.

Elegant, dramatic and unmistakably Art Deco, Sortilèges is particularly well suited to a bedroom, dressing room, fashion studio, powder room or interior inspired by 1920s luxury and Parisian style.
