Ian Fleming's James Bond in The World is Not Enough | Raymond Benson

Ian Lancaster Fleming (28 May 1908 – 12 August 1964) was an English writer, best known for his spy novels featuring the central character, “James Bond”.

 

He was a member of Britain's Naval Intelligence Division during WWII, no doubt drawing on this experience in writing his spy novels.

 

During his lifetime Fleming wrote twelve novels and two short-stories which featured the James Bond character, including:

• Dr No (1958);

After Fleming’s death in 1964, eight other authors have written authorised Bond novels or novelisations, including:

• Kingsley Amis,
• Christopher Wood,
• John Gardner,
• Raymond Benson,
• Sebastian Faulks,
• Jeffery Deaver,
• William Boyd; and
• Anthony Horowitz

A series of young James Bond novels were also written by Charlie Higson.

 

The author, Kate Westbrook wrote three novels based on the diaries of the character, Moneypenny.

 

Ian Fleming’s books have been adapted for television and film, together with sales of numerous merchandise based on the characters in the books, in particular James Bond 007.

Raymond Benson (1955 - ) is an American writer of spy and thriller novels.

 

After the death of Ian Fleming (creator of the “James Bond” spy novels) in 1964, and in association with Ian Fleming's former production company, “Glidrose Publications”, during the period between 1981 and 1996, Gardner was the key writer of authorised spy novels based on the James Bond character.

 

In 1996, John Gardner resigned from writing Bond books. Glidrose Publications then agreed that Benson take on the role previously held by John Gardner to continue writing James Bond books.

 

Benson wrote six James Bond novels, three novelizations, and three short stories.

 

Benson’s James Bond novels included:

• “Zero Minus Ten” (1997);
• “The Facts of Death” (1998);
• “High Time to Kill” (1999)
• “DoubleShot” (2000)
• “Never Dream of Dying” (2001)
• “The Man with the Red Tattoo” (2002)

Benson’s James Bond novelisations of film scripts included:

• “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1997);
• “The World Is Not Enough” (1999);
• “Die Another Day” (2002)

Benson’s short stories on Bond were:

• "Blast from the Past" (1997);
• "Midsummer Night's Doom" (1999);
• "Live at Five" (1999)

Glidrose changed its name to Ian Fleming Publications in 1999.

 

Benson is the author of a number of other books. This includes under the pseudonym, “David Michaels”, such as, books based on the video game series, “Splinter Cell”.
