The Crossing of Antarctica is the official and authoritative account of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955–1958) — the first successful overland crossing of the Antarctic continent via the South Pole.

Led by Sir Vivian Fuchs, with the New Zealand support party under Sir Edmund Hillary, the expedition represented one of the last great heroic-era style explorations, but executed with modern mechanised logistics. It remains one of the landmark achievements of twentieth-century polar exploration.

The expedition was conceived to complete what had eluded explorers such as Scott and Shackleton: a full continental traverse from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea, crossing the South Pole. Fuchs led the main party from Shackleton Base on the Weddell Sea side, while Hillary established Scott Base on the Ross Sea side, laying depots across the Ross Ice Shelf to support the crossing.

The narrative details:

  • The immense logistical planning required to establish bases on opposite sides of the continent

  • The transport of heavy mechanised vehicles and dog teams

  • The scientific objectives, including glaciology, geology, meteorology, and seismic studies

  • The establishment of supply depots across the ice

  • Hillary’s controversial but historic decision to push onward to the South Pole in January 1958

  • Fuchs’ successful arrival at the South Pole on 19 January 1958

  • The final completion of the crossing to Scott Base

The book combines expedition diary, technical record, and personal reflection. It conveys the psychological strain of isolation, mechanical failures in extreme cold, crevasse dangers, and the challenge of leadership under polar conditions.

Importantly, the expedition marked a transition from the romantic “Heroic Age” of Antarctic exploration to the modern scientific era associated with the International Geophysical Year (1957–58).

The folding map endpapers (as shown in your images) illustrate the expedition route across Antarctica, enhancing both the historical and collector appeal.
