When Advertising Became Art
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, advertising underwent a remarkable visual transformation. Advances in colour lithography made it possible to produce large, vivid posters in greater numbers, allowing businesses to promote their products with a level of colour, scale and artistic ambition that had not previously been practical.
Commercial artists began combining bold illustration, decorative lettering and carefully arranged compositions to capture attention in busy streets, railway stations, department stores and public spaces. Rather than relying on text alone, advertisers increasingly used memorable characters, fashionable figures, dramatic scenes and distinctive visual identities to create an emotional connection with the viewer.
Many leading illustrators and poster artists brought the influence of Art Nouveau, Art Deco, modernism and popular illustration into commercial design. Their work helped establish many of the techniques now associated with modern advertising, including strong branding, simplified imagery, persuasive slogans and instantly recognisable typography.
These posters also provide a fascinating record of changing social attitudes and everyday life. They reflect the rise of consumer culture, new technologies, modern transport, changing fashions and the growing availability of household and personal products. Some reveal outdated ideals or marketing claims, while others remain strikingly modern in their use of colour and composition.
Although originally created to sell products and services, many vintage advertisements are now appreciated as important examples of graphic design and social history. Their combination of commercial purpose and artistic invention continues to make them distinctive, decorative and highly collectable.
