Norman Lindsay is a renowned Australian artist, sculptor and writer. This novel is a fictional story about the character, Ella Belairs whom returns to Ballarat, Victoria to live with relatives after spending her childhood in Fiji. The book describes life in Ballarat in the 1890s and the weaknesses and eccentricities of the characters. 

 

The novel was later adapted for television in 1972.
